Kaitlin Olson Speaks Out on Emmy Snub After 20 Seasons of ‘Always Sunny’
So, here’s the deal — It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia just hit a huge milestone: 20 years on the air. That’s right, two full decades of absolute chaos from The Gang. And while the show has been praised by fans, celebrated on the internet, and even cited as the longest-running live-action sitcom in American TV history, there’s one thing it still hasn’t gotten — a single Emmy.

At a recent Emmy Awards ceremony, the cast — including Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Danny DeVito, and Kaitlin Olson — took the stage to present an award, but also took a jab at the fact that they’ve never been recognized by the Emmys themselves. Olson in particular had a bit of fun with the moment, but she didn’t hide the sting. She joked about the lack of nominations — comparing the show’s 16-year snub to Taxi’s 34 nominations in just five seasons. (And yes, DeVito reminded everyone he won one of those.)
But Olson went deeper in a recent interview when asked about the show’s lack of awards recognition. She pointed out how Always Sunny is often misunderstood — it’s edgy, it’s crass, and it pushes boundaries, sure — but it’s also smart . The show uses its over-the-top characters and absurd scenarios to satirize real issues and call out extreme views. But unfortunately, she said, that nuance often gets missed by people who only catch a clip or walk into the show mid-rant.
Olson admitted, “Yeah, if you just jump in and see five seconds, it looks like a bunch of gross idiots yelling.” But when you watch a full episode — or the entire 17 seasons — you start to see how clever it really is. Still, she’s honest about the Emmy situation. “Would I take one? Of course I would,” she laughed. “But at the same time, we already feel validated. Our fans are obsessed, and we get love from them every day.”
So while the Emmys may have passed them by, Olson — and the rest of The Gang — aren’t losing any sleep. They're still writing, filming, and making fans cry from laughter. And honestly? That might be better than a trophy. Though let’s be real… it’s about time the TV academy woke up.
