Matthew Pavlich Appointed CEO of Sydney Swans in Major AFL Move
In a major shift within the AFL world, Fremantle legend and media personality Matthew Pavlich has been officially named the next Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Swans. The news has caught the attention of many in the sporting community—not just because of the move itself, but because of what Pavlich brings to the table.
This announcement comes as Tom Harley, the current Swans CEO, prepares to step down at the end of the 2025 season. Harley will be taking on a significant role as Chief Operating Officer of the AFL, setting the stage for Pavlich to step in and lead one of the most respected clubs in Australian football.

Now, for anyone who’s followed AFL over the years, Pavlich needs no introduction. He’s an AFL Hall of Famer, played 353 games for Fremantle, captained the Dockers for nine seasons, was a six-time All-Australian, and won the club’s best and fairest award six times. But what makes this move even more interesting is the journey he’s taken since retiring in 2016.
Since hanging up the boots, Pavlich has successfully transitioned into media, becoming a familiar face on Nine News in Perth, and also diving into business. He co-founded a talent and tech business called Launchd, has been involved in the creative agency PMY Group, and completed an MBA at the University of Western Australia. Add to that over a decade on the AFL Players’ Association Board—including three years as president—and you’ve got someone with both footy pedigree and serious leadership chops.
Interestingly, Pavlich himself admitted that the Swans role wasn’t something he’d initially considered. But after discussions with his wife Lauren and their three kids, he realized the opportunity was simply too good to pass up. He said he’s always admired the Swans from a distance—particularly their culture and consistent success—and now looks forward to helping shape their future.
Swans Chairman Andrew Pridham was glowing in his praise, calling Pavlich a "champion of our game" and someone who can bring fresh insight and valuable experience both on and off the field. It’s clear the club sees this as a long-term, strategic appointment.
So, as Pavlich prepares to relocate to Sydney and take on the top job, all eyes will be on how he guides the Swans into their next chapter. With a strong football brain, business acumen, and leadership experience, expectations are high—but so is the excitement.
