Lions Roar Past Pies as AFL Drama Unfolds Across Round 21
So here’s what’s going down in round 21 of the AFL – and wow, there’s a lot to unpack. Let’s start with the biggest clash of the weekend: Collingwood versus Brisbane at the MCG . Two serious premiership contenders facing off, and honestly, it lived up to the hype early on.
The Lions hit hard straight out of the gate , dominating the first quarter. Hugh McCluggage was everywhere, controlling play, and young forwards Logan Morris and Henry Smith made their presence felt with two goals each. It’s worth noting that Smith only debuted recently and has already kicked his first career goal – a huge moment, celebrated by the entire team. Then just minutes later, he kicked another from 50 metres out. This guy’s confidence is soaring, and Brisbane clearly sees him as a key target moving forward.

Collingwood weren’t totally out of it though. Nick Daicos made an early impact with a goal and some crisp ball movement, assisted by Jordan De Goey, who’s just returned to senior level. De Goey looked fired up and involved in the midfield early, which is a promising sign for the Pies, even though they were clearly outplayed for much of the opening term. At quarter time, it was Brisbane 34 to Collingwood’s 14 – not a blowout, but definitely a statement.
Elsewhere around the grounds, Gold Coast demolished Richmond . The Suns were relentless, with standout performances from Ben King – who kicked his 50th goal of the season – and Bailey Humphrey, who just kept punishing the Tigers. Ethan Read also chipped in with a couple of goals, and the Suns’ pressure game was on full display. Richmond only managed their first goal in the third quarter, breaking a drought not seen since the year 2000. That’s not a stat you want to revisit if you're a Tigers fan.
Oh, and speaking of controversial moments – there was a scary one at centre bounce between Gold Coast and Richmond. An umpire, Richmond's Toby Nankervis, and Suns’ ruck Jarrod Witts all collided after a badly directed bounce. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but it’s reignited the debate around whether the traditional bounce should be scrapped in favour of a safer ball-up. Given what happened, that conversation might be fast-tracked.
Meanwhile, over at Hawthorn, horror injury news struck with Will Day ruled out for the season , which is a huge blow. And again, the SCG surface is back in the firing line after complaints about its condition.
So, it’s been a packed round already, with finals just around the corner. Brisbane's win tonight only strengthens their flag credentials, while Collingwood will need to regroup quickly. If this round’s anything to go by, the last few weeks of the season are going to be a rollercoaster.
