Pete Carroll Reflects on His Emotional Return to Seattle as Raiders Head Coach

So, Pete Carroll just made his return to Seattle—but this time, not as the Seahawks coach, but leading the Raiders. It was definitely a big moment, but surprisingly, Carroll kept things pretty grounded about the whole experience. At a recent press conference after the game ended in a wild tie—because of a blocked game-winning field goal attempt—Carroll talked about how being back at Lumen Field felt to him.

He said it wasn’t some huge emotional overload or anything like that. Instead, he described it simply as “a football game.” Pete mentioned that coaching has always been like fighting battles for others throughout his life. So, in that sense, it wasn’t so different this time. He was focused on his team and the game at hand. But that didn’t mean he didn’t appreciate being there. In fact, he said it was really cool to be back, and that he’s always loved the whole experience he had with the Seahawks during his 14 seasons there.

Carroll was clear that he hasn’t forgotten those years or the bond he shared with Seattle fans and players. He made sure to say that he doesn’t disrespect any of that, but the moment itself didn’t feel too wild or crazy. It was more about the opportunity to play in such a great venue and the appreciation that the league put them in a meaningful game.

What’s funny is that during the game, there were a few moments where Carroll caught himself thinking some of the great plays on the screen were made by Seahawks players, before realizing it was his current Raiders squad making those plays. He even smiled while sharing that little mix-up.

Looking ahead, the Raiders are set to play the 49ers at home next Saturday and then close out the preseason on the road against the Cardinals on August 23. Carroll seems to be taking everything in stride, focused on his new role but carrying a fondness for his past in Seattle.

It’s always interesting to see how a coach adapts when returning to a place where they made a big impact, especially switching sides like this. Pete Carroll made it clear—no matter what team he’s coaching, the love for Seattle and its fans is still there, but his eyes are on the present and the future with the Raiders.
