Shedeur Sanders Makes Anticipated Browns Debut Against Panthers
The buzz in Charlotte tonight is all about one player — Shedeur Sanders — making his much-anticipated NFL preseason debut for the Cleveland Browns. Just months ago, Sanders was expected by many draft analysts to be a top-10 pick. Instead, he tumbled to the fifth round, going 144th overall. Now, under the Friday night lights and broadcast live on NFL Network, he’s getting his first real chance to show the league what it missed.
Cleveland’s quarterback room has been hit hard by injuries. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are both sidelined with hamstring issues, and while veteran Joe Flacco is healthy, head coach Kevin Stefanski has decided to rest him. That leaves just Sanders and recently signed Tyler Huntley to handle all the quarterback duties tonight.

He played his college ball under his father, Deion Sanders, first at Jackson State and later at Colorado, producing over 14,000 passing yards, 134 touchdowns, and 17 rushing scores in his career. His father admitted the moment feels strange but believes his son is prepared, saying Shedeur has always approached every game — even preseason — like it’s the Super Bowl.
Shoulder soreness slowed Sanders earlier in camp, but Stefanski confirmed that’s no longer an issue. The rookie is being thrown right into the fire, facing Carolina’s first-team defense. Panthers head coach Dave Canales says his starters, including quarterback Bryce Young, will play at least a series or two. And Young wasted no time making his presence felt, throwing a touchdown to Jalen Coker to give Carolina an early 7–0 lead.
Sanders’ night began with some rookie moments — a high throw on his first pass, a quick three-and-out, and later a turnover on downs when the pocket collapsed. But there were flashes, too: a well-timed screen pass for a big gain, and a third-and-long scramble to pick up a first down that drew cheers from the Browns sideline.
Emotions in this preseason game have already boiled over, with a double ejection after a scuffle between Panthers receiver Xavier Legette and Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins. Still, the spotlight keeps swinging back to Sanders. Every snap is a chance for him to prove that falling in the draft was a mistake — and with Cleveland’s depth chart in flux, these reps could go a long way toward securing a bigger role.
For now, it’s just preseason football, but for Shedeur Sanders, it’s more than that. It’s a statement game, a first impression, and maybe even the start of rewriting his NFL story. And under these bright Carolina lights, everyone is watching to see if he can make it count.
