Suns Shine Early as Tigers Struggle in Goalless First Half
So, one of the talking points from AFL Round 21 is what’s happening up north — Gold Coast vs Richmond at Carrara Stadium. And if you’re a Tigers fan, this first half might’ve been tough to sit through.
By halftime, the Suns had well and truly taken control of the game. The scoreboard read 5.5 (35) to just 0.5 (5) in favour of Gold Coast. Yep, Richmond didn’t kick a single goal in that entire first half. They did get on the board eventually, but it took them a long while — and even then, it was just behinds until Harry Armstrong finally converted a smart mark into their first major.

Now, don’t let the scoreline fool you into thinking Richmond wasn’t trying — their effort was there. But in terms of polish and execution, they were definitely second best. Gold Coast didn’t have to be perfect, either. It wasn’t exactly silky football from them, but they were simply the better side, especially around the contest.
The Suns’ physicality stood out — they looked hungrier, faster, and more structured. Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson were dominating through the middle, as expected. And young gun Ethan Read? He really showed why there’s so much hype around him. Not only was he competing hard in the ruck, but he was also pushing forward and making an impact on the scoreboard. That kind of athleticism from a tall is just rare — he nailed a set shot from 45 out on a tight angle like it was nothing. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
Richmond, on the other hand, looked like a young team still finding its way. Their ball movement lacked purpose, and they struggled to create any meaningful opportunities inside 50. The Suns were able to cut them off time and time again and transition cleanly into attack.
It must be said, though — the match itself didn’t reach great heights in that first half. Bit scrappy overall. But when one team can’t kick a goal for nearly two full quarters, the spectacle does take a hit. Hopefully, the second half offers a bit more bite and we see a response from the Tigers, because the Suns already looked comfortable and weren't even at full throttle.
So yeah, Gold Coast dominated the first half. Richmond was kept goalless for ages, and while effort was there, execution just wasn’t. Let’s see if they can turn things around after the long break.
