TBI Investigates Deputy Shooting After Carjacking Chase
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has confirmed it is looking into a tense and dangerous situation that unfolded Saturday afternoon in Gibson County. The events began in Madison County, where deputies were alerted to a carjacking that took place earlier in the day in the Beech Bluff Road area. Around 4:45 p.m., a Madison County deputy spotted the stolen vehicle, which was carrying three juveniles, and a pursuit was initiated.
That chase didn’t stay contained for long. It moved across county lines into Gibson County, where the situation quickly escalated. According to preliminary reports, the pursuit ended near the intersection of Highway 79 South and South Main Street in the Town of Gibson. For reasons still being investigated, shots were fired by the pursuing deputy. One of the juveniles was struck in the arm and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other two suspects surrendered at the scene and were placed in custody without further incident.

The deputy himself was also injured during the confrontation. He sustained a head injury and had to be flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have confirmed that his injuries are not life-threatening.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was quickly called in at the request of District Attorney General Frederick Agee. Special agents are now leading the effort to piece together exactly how the pursuit developed and what led to the gunfire. This includes gathering physical evidence, reviewing the scene, and conducting interviews with all involved.
The TBI made clear that its role is strictly investigative. It will not determine whether the deputy’s use of force was justified. That decision will rest entirely with the district attorney once all findings have been submitted for review. It was also emphasized that the names of officers involved will not be released by TBI, as that responsibility lies with the respective sheriff’s department.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported a heavy law enforcement presence, with agencies from Madison County, Gibson County, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and multiple emergency medical services responding. Bystanders described hearing gunfire and saw suspects being detained as the scene was secured with crime scene tape. A red car, believed to be the stolen vehicle, was seen wrecked at the location.

While much remains under review, what is known is that a stolen vehicle, a high-speed chase, and an officer-involved shooting have left both a deputy and a juvenile injured, though thankfully neither critically.
