Vancouver Braces for a Month’s Worth of Rain in a Day

So, here’s what’s coming our way — and it’s not your usual light Vancouver drizzle. Environment Canada is warning that on Friday, August 15, Metro Vancouver could see as much as 50 millimetres of rain in just over 24 hours. To put that into perspective, August normally gets around 36 millimetres in the entire month, so this is like squeezing all of that into one big, soggy day.

According to meteorologist Christy Climenhaga, this isn’t just an ordinary rain system. It’s being described as a “mini atmospheric river” — the kind of weather pattern that funnels large amounts of moisture right onto the coast. The first clouds will be rolling in Thursday evening, with light showers starting overnight. But the real downpour? That’s expected to hit early Friday morning, right during the morning commute. Higher elevations, such as North Vancouver, will likely get the worst of it, possibly the full 50 millimetres, while lower areas might see closer to 30.

The heavy rain isn’t expected to cause major flooding concerns, but there’s still a good chance we’ll see weather alerts and rainfall warnings issued within the next day and a half. Residents are being encouraged to watch for updates and plan accordingly. With rain like this, anything from slippery roads to minor drainage backups could be in play, so it’s worth being prepared.

On top of the wet conditions, temperatures will dip noticeably. Friday’s high is forecast to be just 18°C, with an overnight low of 17°C — fairly mild for nighttime, thanks to the cloud cover trapping some warmth. The storm is expected to ease up late Friday night, but showers may linger into Saturday. The good news? By Sunday, conditions should improve significantly, with sunshine peeking through and highs around 23°C.

For anyone planning weekend activities, especially outdoors, Sunday is looking like the best bet. Saturday may still have some scattered showers, but nothing compared to the wall of water expected on Friday. The timing is particularly relevant for those heading to the opening weekend of the 2025 Fair at the PNE, which starts Saturday — so maybe pack both your umbrella and your sunglasses, just in case.

In short, Vancouver is about to get a quick but intense soaking. The rain will be heavy, it will be fast, and it will likely be remembered as one of the wettest August days we’ve had in a while. So if you’ve got outdoor plans on Friday, you might want to swap them for something indoors — and maybe keep that rain jacket handy. This is one of those days where “waterproof” is going to be the most important word in your wardrobe.
