Australia’s First Golden Bachelor Begins His Search for Love
Australia is about to see a brand-new chapter in the Bachelor franchise, and it’s not quite what people might expect. Instead of focusing on twenty- or thirty-somethings chasing whirlwind romances, this series is about love later in life, love shaped by experience, and love that’s ready for a second—or even third—chance.
At the centre of it all is Bear, a 61-year-old Sydneysider who has been announced as Australia’s very first Golden Bachelor. Bear is no stranger to both joy and heartbreak. Back in 1998, he moved to the northern beaches with his late wife Audrey, and together they raised three sons. But life turned upside down in 2011, when he lost both Audrey and his mother in the same year. Since then, his focus has been fatherhood, raising his boys and holding his family together. Now, more than a decade later, Bear has decided the time is right to open his heart again and see if love can be rediscovered.

Speaking about this new adventure, Bear admitted it still feels a little surreal. He described it as an incredible privilege, not just for himself but for the twenty remarkable women who have chosen to join him on this journey. According to him, it takes courage from everyone involved to take such a leap, and he says he couldn’t be more grateful or more excited to see where it might lead.
Hosting the show is Samantha Armytage, who believes viewers are in for something special. She called Bear a “one-in-a-million” man—full of integrity, compassion, and, in her words, quite handsome too. For her, this version of the franchise offers something very different: relationships built not on youthful firsts, but on maturity, resilience, and the lessons that life brings.
And of course, the spotlight won’t just be on Bear. Twenty accomplished women from all walks of life are stepping forward to meet him. There’s Angela, a 52-year-old psychotherapist who admits her guilty pleasure is putting on her bathrobe as soon as she gets home. There’s Bianca, a radio presenter with decades of experience, full of wit and energy, who says she’s ready to embrace Bear’s family if he has children. There’s Catherine, an interior designer who turned to bodybuilding to rebuild her confidence, and Elizete, a property manager who has known deep love more than once and is willing to try again.
The cast is as diverse as it is inspiring: doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, creatives, and carers. Some have survived heartbreak, some have survived serious illness, and some have simply reached the stage of life where they want companionship that’s true and lasting. Together, they bring humour, wisdom, resilience, and a sense of adventure.
The Golden Bachelor Australia is not just another dating show. It’s a chance to prove that love doesn’t expire with age—that no matter what stage of life someone is in, the hope of finding that special connection remains. Bear and his twenty leading ladies are ready to remind everyone that romance can be rediscovered, even after loss, even after heartbreak, and that sometimes, the golden years may hold the greatest love stories of all.
