Body of Missing UH Student Jade McKissic Found in Brays Bayou

The Houston community has been shaken by heartbreaking news this week. The body of 20-year-old University of Houston student, Jade “Sage” McKissic, was discovered in Brays Bayou not far from the UH campus. Her disappearance had captured the attention of fellow students, family, and the wider Houston area after she was reported missing earlier this month.

According to reports, Jade was last seen on September 10, leaving LA Burgers and Daiquiris on North MacGregor Way near Scott Street in the city’s Third Ward. She was officially reported missing just a few days later, on September 14. On Monday, September 15, Houston police confirmed that a body recovered near Spur 5 South was identified as Jade. The location where she was found was less than a mile from campus, making the discovery even more difficult for her classmates and friends.

At the time of her death, Jade was a junior at UH, studying strategic communications and advertising. She was known by her peers as a hardworking and involved student. Not only was she focused on her academics, but she also worked as a desk assistant on campus and served as part of the student orientation team. Her nickname, “Sage,” reflected the calm and kind presence she was said to bring to those around her. Friends and relatives described her as a dedicated student who was also active in church and community activities.

The University of Houston responded to the tragedy by issuing a statement through Vice President of Student Affairs, Paul Kittle. In the message, students were reminded that Jade was not just a name in the news, but a friend, a classmate, and a member of the UH family. The statement emphasized the deep sadness felt across the campus and encouraged students to take care of one another during this time of grief. Counseling and mental health resources have been made available for anyone struggling to process the loss.

As of now, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has not released Jade’s cause of death. An autopsy is being conducted, and the Houston Police Department has confirmed that the case remains under investigation. For Jade’s family, friends, and the UH community, the waiting period only adds to the pain and uncertainty.

The news of Jade’s passing has left many in shock. For students who saw her in class or worked alongside her in campus programs, it feels unreal that someone so young and full of promise could be gone so suddenly. For her family, the loss is immeasurable. While questions remain unanswered, what is certain is that Jade “Sage” McKissic’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

This tragedy has reminded many in Houston of how fragile life is, and how deeply a single life can impact a community.
