Chargers’ Khalil Mack Suffers Elbow Injury in Win Over Raiders

It was a tough night for one of the NFL’s most respected pass rushers, Khalil Mack. The Los Angeles Chargers might have walked away with a 20–9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night, but the story that stuck with fans wasn’t just the victory—it was Mack’s painful early exit from the game.

The injury happened late in the first quarter. Mack was diving in to make a tackle on Raiders wide receiver Tre Tucker. As he went down, his left arm got caught awkwardly between players. The result was brutal—his forearm bent far back in a way it simply shouldn’t bend. Almost immediately, Mack reacted as if he knew something was wrong. He jumped to his feet quickly, then sprinted straight to the medical tent without hesitation.

From the sidelines, it was clear the pain was intense. He doubled over as team trainers examined him, and not long after, he was escorted back to the locker room while holding his arm in place. By halftime, the Chargers announced what many had feared: Mack was officially ruled out with an elbow injury. When he reappeared on the sidelines, his shoulder pads were off, and his left arm was immobilized in a sling—a clear sign his night was over.

This is a major concern for the Chargers. At 34 years old, Mack is still performing at a high level. Last season he recorded 39 total tackles and six sacks, and earlier in this game he had already notched his first sack of the new season. His career résumé is packed with accolades—nine Pro Bowl selections, three first-team All-Pro honors, and the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year award. His 108.5 career sacks rank him among the top pass rushers of his era, sitting fourth among active players behind stars like Von Miller and Cameron Jordan.

For the Chargers, losing Mack for any extended stretch would be a serious blow. The team already moved on from Joey Bosa this past offseason, so the depth at outside linebacker will now be tested. Bud Dupree, Tuli Tuipulotu, and younger players like Kyle Kennard and Caleb Murphy may need to step up if Mack’s recovery takes time.

Still, Los Angeles showed resilience in his absence. Quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense forced Raiders quarterback Geno Smith into three interceptions. Under new head coach Pete Carroll, the Raiders dropped to 1–1 on the season, while the Chargers improved to 2–0.

The focus now shifts to Mack’s health. Imaging and evaluations will determine the severity of the elbow injury, but his immediate reaction and the use of a sling suggest it could be significant. For a player who began his career with the Raiders back in their Oakland days and returned this season on a one-year, $18 million deal, the timing couldn’t be more bittersweet.

As the Chargers prepare to host the Denver Broncos next week, fans and teammates alike will be holding their breath, waiting for news on the future of their defensive leader.
