Ex-MP David Warburton Dies Suddenly at 59 in London Flat
David Warburton, the former Conservative MP for Somerton and Frome, has died suddenly at the age of 59. His body was discovered on August 26th at a flat in Chelsea, west London, after emergency services were called. Police confirmed that his death was being treated as unexpected, but not suspicious. Paramedics who attended the scene were unable to revive him, and his family has since been informed.
Warburton’s political career was marked by both notable victories and heavy controversies. First elected in 2015, he achieved one of the largest swings to the Conservatives in that election. His popularity in Somerset grew quickly, and he went on to secure re-election in 2019 with a strong majority. Warburton firmly denied the accusations, and while an investigation was later closed without findings against him, the episode took a significant toll on him personally and politically. Around the same period, he admitted to having used cocaine after what he described as an evening of drinking strong Japanese whisky. That admission triggered further scrutiny, and by June 2023, he resigned from Parliament altogether, saying he had not been given a fair process to defend himself.
Following his resignation, a by-election was held, and the seat was taken by the Liberal Democrats. Later boundary changes meant that his former constituency of Somerton and Frome was eventually dissolved ahead of the 2024 general election.
Outside of politics, Warburton was known for a striking personal transformation during the Covid lockdowns, when he lost six stone by focusing on fitness at home. That change drew praise from some in Westminster, including then health secretary Matt Hancock. However, others viewed his reinvention with curiosity, noting that it coincided with what some described as a mid-life crisis.
Reactions to his death have been filled with sadness. Marcus Fysh, another former Conservative MP from Somerset, called him a “steadfast colleague” and praised his commitment to both Somerset and Britain. Former Labour MP Simon Danczuk also remarked that although Warburton had faced difficulties, he had been cleared of wrongdoing and had been rebuilding his life. Friends said he was beginning to do well in business and seemed to have turned a corner before this sudden tragedy.
