Paul Thomas Anderson has returned in a big way with his latest film One Battle After Another , and this time he’s stepped firmly into the present. Known for period pieces like There Will Be Blood and Licorice Pizza , Anderson had often been seen as someone who preferred exploring the past. But with this film, he’s delivered a sprawling, chaotic, and surprisingly tender story that feels directly plugged into the anxieties of our world right now.
The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a demolition expert-turned-reluctant father figure, and it’s no exaggeration to say that his performance is one of his boldest in years. At first, he plays a character known as “Ghetto Pat,” a rookie member of a revolutionary group called the French 75. Their mission: to rescue migrants detained at a California camp. From the start, the film barrels forward with action, comedy, and an almost surreal sense of danger. DiCaprio’s character catches the attention of Perfidia Beverly Hills, a fierce revolutionary played by Teyana Taylor, and their relationship sparks both passion and chaos. When Sean Penn enters the story as Colonel Lockjaw, a military leader whose obsession with Perfidia blurs into menace, the stage is set for a collision of power, betrayal, and survival.
What makes the film truly stand out is how it refuses to sit still. After the first wave of chaos, the story jumps forward in time. DiCaprio’s character, now reinvented as Bob Ferguson, lives in hiding with his teenage daughter Willa, played by newcomer Chase Infiniti. The father-daughter dynamic becomes the heart of the movie, as Bob’s past comes crashing into his present. Benicio Del Toro enters the picture as a wise but grounded karate teacher, adding another layer of humanity and quiet strength to the escalating conflict.
The action sequences — including a wild car chase across desert highways — are staged with breathtaking intensity. Anderson’s longtime collaborator, composer Jonny Greenwood, provides a relentless score that keeps the energy pulsing, while Michael Bauman’s cinematography delivers moments that feel tailor-made for IMAX. Yet beneath the spectacle, the movie is deeply personal. At its core, it’s about what it means to fight battles not just for ideals, but for family.
Interestingly, San Diego County played a major role in bringing this story to life. The production spent about six weeks filming in the region in 2024, pumping nearly $7 million into the local economy. Long before its official release, the movie was already leaving its mark.
One Battle After Another is massive in scope, political in its undertones, and laced with humor that cuts right through the darkness. More than anything, it feels like a film about surviving in a world that seems to have lost its grip — and about how even amid chaos, love and family can be revolutionary acts in themselves. It opens nationwide this Friday, September 26, and if early reactions are any sign, it’s a cinematic experience people will be talking about for a long time.
