Remembering Nadir Mohamed, Visionary Leader and Former Rogers CEO
Nadir Mohamed, one of Canada’s most respected business leaders and the former CEO of Rogers Communications, has passed away at the age of 69. His death has been met with an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and Canada’s business community, all recognizing his remarkable contributions to the country.
Born abroad and having immigrated to Canada, Mohamed built an extraordinary career that became an inspiration for many. He first joined Rogers in 2000, quickly rising through leadership positions. From 2001 to 2005, he served as CEO of Rogers Wireless, and then became Chief Operating Officer of Rogers Communications Group. In 2009, following the passing of founder Ted Rogers, he was entrusted with the role of President and CEO of the company. For nearly five years, he guided Rogers through a rapidly changing telecommunications landscape. Under his leadership, the company strengthened its position as one of Canada’s largest wireless carriers and struck a historic $5.2-billion NHL broadcast rights deal in 2013, a move that reshaped Canadian sports broadcasting.

But Mohamed’s legacy goes far beyond corporate boardrooms. After retiring from Rogers in 2013, he dedicated his energy to Canada’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. He co-founded ScaleUp Ventures to support technology start-ups, chaired DMZ Ventures at Toronto Metropolitan University, and served as a founding board member of NEXT Canada, Vector Institute, and several other innovation hubs. His deep commitment to fostering innovation and mentorship left a lasting imprint on Canada’s business landscape.
He was equally active in philanthropy and community leadership. Mohamed served on the boards of Tennis Canada, the UHN Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation, and spent years championing causes that uplifted entrepreneurs and young leaders. In recognition of his impact, he was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2019.
Those who worked with him describe Mohamed as gracious, humble, and generous. Edward Rogers, Executive Chair of Rogers Communications, remembered him as “an exceptional leader who guided Rogers during extraordinary times of change.” Current CEO Tony Staffieri called him “a true class act” who passionately advanced Canada’s innovation agenda. Friends also recall his humour and warmth, even as he quietly battled cancer in recent years. Entrepreneur Reza Satchu, a close friend, said Mohamed always cared deeply about Canada and about helping others succeed.
Nadir Mohamed’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and giving back. From leading one of Canada’s biggest companies to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs, his impact will be felt for years to come. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy—of innovation, generosity, and vision—will continue to inspire.
