Ciryl Gane Reacts After UFC 321 Eye-Poke Controversy
UFC 321 delivered excitement, but for Ciryl Gane, the night ended in frustration rather than triumph. The highly anticipated clash between Gane and Tom Aspinall was abruptly halted after an accidental double eye-poke, leaving the fight ruled a no-contest. The bout, which was meant to be Gane’s third shot at an undisputed UFC heavyweight title, instead became a night of disappointment and reflection.
From the very start, Gane appeared to have momentum on his side. “I think we started very well,” he shared during the post-fight press conference. “Everybody knows I start with my jab, and he starts aggressively to surprise his opponent. I defended the takedown and touched him, and we even saw some blood on his nose. It was a really great first round.” Unfortunately, the promising beginning was overshadowed by the unintentional fouls that changed the course of the fight.

The sequence unfolded quickly, leaving Aspinall unable to continue after repeatedly alerting doctors that his vision had been impaired. The crowd reacted with boos, while both fighters displayed visible frustration in the cage. Overcome with emotion, Gane dropped to his knees as the fight was stopped, struggling to process the sudden turn of events.
“I really, really wanted to continue the fight,” Gane admitted. “First, I was very angry because I didn’t want him to stop. Then, I felt disappointed, sad, and later apologetic for the fans.” Gane also emphasized that the eye-pokes were accidental, explaining, “I didn’t do it on purpose. I know what it’s like to have an eye poke because when I fought Derrick Lewis in 2021, I got one and was seeing double for a full round. So I know how it feels. I’m not going to say he’s lying.”
UFC President Dana White confirmed that Aspinall had been transported to the hospital following the incident. Despite the abrupt ending, the rivalry between these two elite heavyweights is far from over. White assured fans that a rematch would be arranged as soon as possible. Gane, for his part, intends to take some time to regroup and spend moments with his family before preparing to face Aspinall again.
While UFC 321 didn’t deliver the closure fans had hoped for, it highlighted the intensity and unpredictability of the heavyweight division. Ciryl Gane’s blend of skill and sportsmanship was evident even in disappointment, leaving the MMA world eagerly anticipating the next chapter in what promises to be a compelling rivalry.
