Dani Dyer Opens Up About Loving the Wrong People — and Finding Strength Through It All

Dani Dyer has opened up with rare honesty about her past relationships — especially her time with ex-boyfriend Sammy Kimmence, who was jailed for fraud, and fellow Love Island star Jack Fincham. Speaking on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, the 29-year-old reality star reflected on the ups and downs of her love life, admitting she “loved the wrong people,” but insists she wouldn’t change a thing.

Dani, who rose to fame after winning Love Island in 2018 alongside Jack Fincham, explained that her journey through heartbreak has shaped who she is today. After her split with Jack, she rekindled her relationship with Sammy Kimmence — a man she had dated before appearing on the show. Their romance led to the birth of their son, Santiago, in early 2021. However, the relationship ended just months later when Sammy was sentenced to three years in prison for scamming elderly victims out of £34,000.

Reflecting on that painful chapter, Dani said she realized too late that she had gone back to someone who “never wanted to settle down” before Love Island. Still, she says she holds no regrets, adding that having Santiago “changed everything” for her. “I think I had to go through that relationship to get my little boy,” she said. “He made me see what real love is.”

Dani also revealed that she never visited Sammy in prison, describing it as a turning point. “As soon as I had Santi, I knew what love was. It was like a switch,” she shared. “That was such a hard time, and maybe I was naïve, but I’ve learned from it.” Sammy has since been released from jail, and Dani says they remain “very civil” for their son’s sake. “There will always be school plays and birthdays — I’d never want Santi to feel uncomfortable,” she explained.

Now married to footballer Jarrod Bowen, with whom she shares twins Summer and Star, Dani admitted she sometimes feels guilty that Santiago doesn’t have both parents under one roof. “He’s never known his mum and dad together,” she said softly. “When Jarrod comes home, the twins run to him shouting ‘Daddy,’ and it hits me that Santi doesn’t get that moment.”

Speaking about Jack Fincham, her Love Island co-winner, Dani said their breakup was simply down to timing. “It was so quick,” she admitted. “Inside that villa, I thought he was the one, but outside, we just wanted different things. Jack loved the nightlife, and I wanted something more settled.”

With refreshing honesty, Dani summed it all up simply: “I loved the wrong people, but I don’t regret any of it. Those experiences made me who I am today — a stronger person and a better mum.”
