Domi and Knies Lead Maple Leafs Past Flames in Thrilling 4-3 Win
What a night it was at Scotiabank Arena, as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged out the Calgary Flames in a dramatic 4-3 victory — thanks to an electric performance from Max Domi and Matthew Knies. These two were simply unstoppable, combining for all the key moments that sealed the game and kept Toronto’s momentum rolling before they hit the road.
From the opening puck drop, it was clear this wasn’t going to be an easy night for either team. Calgary came out sharp, with Morgan Frost — son of former Leafs announcer Andy Frost — striking first on just the Flames’ third shot. That early goal lit a fire under Toronto, and the response was swift and fierce.
The turning point came in the second period, arguably one of the Leafs’ best of the season. Just over three minutes in, Max Domi ripped a beautiful wrist shot past Calgary goalie Dustin Wolf to tie the game. Domi’s energy seemed to ignite the entire bench. The Leafs dominated possession, kept the pressure high, and forced the Flames to play deep in their own zone.

But as hockey so often goes, one lapse changed everything. With a little over two minutes left in the period, Calgary’s Joel Farabee slipped through, taking advantage of a defensive misread to give the Flames back the lead. The home crowd deflated—only for Matthew Knies to bring them roaring back moments later. Showing off his strength and patience, Knies muscled his way to the front of the net and lifted the puck over Wolf to even things at 3-3 heading into the final frame.
Then came the play of the night. A messy sequence in front of Calgary’s net saw the puck bounce awkwardly before landing on Domi’s stick. With everyone expecting a whistle, Domi stayed alert, fed Knies, and when the Flames defense collapsed, he took the shot himself—firing home the game-winner. It was his second goal of the night, and his 20th career multi-goal game.
Coach Craig Berube praised Domi’s recent surge, saying he’s been “a different player” over the past few games—more engaged, more competitive, and clearly more confident. Goalie Anthony Stolarz, who picked up the win, also highlighted Domi’s deceptive shooting touch, calling it “tough to read and even harder to stop.”
As for Knies, Domi couldn’t help but laugh when describing his linemate. “He’s a beast,” he said. “When he goes into traffic, it’s like one-on-three, and somehow he still comes out with the puck.”
The Leafs now ride a two-game home win streak as they prepare to hit the road for matchups in Columbus and Philadelphia. And if Domi and Knies keep this chemistry going, Toronto fans might just have plenty more to cheer about in the weeks ahead.
