The Fall of Prince Andrew: From Royalty to Mr. Mountbatten Windsor
It’s official — Prince Andrew is no longer “His Royal Highness.” In a historic and rather sobering move, King Charles has begun a formal process to strip his younger brother of all royal styles, titles, and honours. Buckingham Palace confirmed that Andrew will now be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and will be vacating his long-time home at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.
This marks one of the most decisive steps the monarchy has taken in decades — a clear effort by the King to protect the royal family’s reputation after years of controversy surrounding Andrew’s connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Reports suggest that Charles had the support of Prince William in reaching this decision, and notably, Andrew did not object to the process.
According to the Palace, formal notice has been served for Andrew to surrender the lease of Royal Lodge, a 30-room residence he’s occupied for years. Once the arrangements are complete, he’s expected to relocate to a private property on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk — with the King personally funding his accommodation. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also move out and make her own living arrangements.

The titles being removed include Prince, Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh . Even the honours of the Order of the Garter and Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order will be revoked. Though Andrew stopped using the HRH style in 2022, it’s only now being formally rescinded. His daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles, as those come under different royal letters patent.
This action follows years of public and political pressure, intensified after the release of excerpts from the late Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir. Giuffre — who accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her when she was 17 — tragically died by suicide earlier this year. Despite Andrew’s repeated denials and his 2022 settlement of £12 million without admitting liability, the damage to his reputation has been irreversible.
Giuffre’s family has since called the move “a victory,” saying her courage has “brought down a British prince.” Politicians have echoed similar sentiments. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy described the King’s action as a “brave and right step,” while others in Parliament emphasized that accountability must extend to everyone, regardless of status.
Andrew’s fall from grace — from royal duties and military affiliations to complete removal of royal status — is both remarkable and tragic. The man once known as the Duke of York is now, quite literally, Mr. Windsor . For the monarchy, this step seems aimed at drawing a firm line between the institution and the scandals that have shadowed it for years — a move intended to protect its future, even at the cost of a brother’s crown.
