Akon Arrested in Georgia Over Missed Court Appearance

Grammy-nominated singer Akon, best known for his early 2000s hits like Locked Up and Lonely , has found himself in legal trouble once again. The 52-year-old artist, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, was arrested in Georgia on November 7 after reportedly failing to appear in court over a case involving his suspended driver’s license.

According to reports, Akon was taken into custody by Chamblee Police after a warrant was issued out of Roswell, New Mexico. Jail records confirmed that the artist was booked into DeKalb County Jail but released roughly six hours later. A mugshot released afterward showed him wearing a black hoodie, looking calm but expressionless.

The situation reportedly began months ago, in September, when Akon’s Tesla Cybertruck broke down in the middle of a Georgia road. When officers stopped to help, they ran his details and discovered that his driver’s license had been suspended due to a previous failure to appear in court from January 2023. Akon was cited at the time for driving on a suspended license and released at the scene. Police documents also noted that a vape pen found in his car was confiscated and destroyed.

Fast forward to November, a Flock security camera alert triggered by his Tesla helped police locate him near a car shop on Chamblee Dunwoody Road. Officer Joshua Rosa, who made the arrest, wrote that Akon remained calm and cooperative throughout the encounter. He reportedly acknowledged knowing about the outstanding warrant before being handcuffed and taken to jail.

TMZ and local outlets confirmed that Akon “got locked up in Georgia” but was released shortly after. His representatives have not yet commented on the arrest or the missed court appearance.

Despite the incident, Akon remains one of the most recognizable figures in music. The Senegalese-American artist has earned five Grammy nominations and worked with stars like Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Lady Gaga. Beyond music, he has become known for his humanitarian projects, particularly the “Akon Lighting Africa” initiative, which has provided solar power to thousands of communities across Africa.

He has also made headlines for his ambitious “Akon City” project — a planned futuristic smart city in Senegal powered by his own cryptocurrency, Akoin. The £4.7 billion project was announced in 2018 and envisioned as a “real-life Wakanda,” though progress has reportedly stalled, with the site still largely undeveloped.

While fans are expressing concern and curiosity online, Akon himself has remained silent about the incident. For now, his arrest serves as a reminder that even stars who once sang about being Locked Up can sometimes find themselves reliving those lyrics in real life.
