The punter’s luck so far has been nothing short of extraordinary. The first nine legs of the bet all played out successfully within a day of being placed. From there, the ticket’s fate rested on two massive Australian races: Ka Ying Rising’s victory in The Everest and Via Sistina’s win in the Cox Plate. Against all odds, both came through — leaving one leg to go.
What’s made the wait even more nerve-wracking is the uncertainty surrounding Buckaroo’s participation. Trainer Chris Waller had been undecided about whether the horse would even start in the Cup, describing it as a 50-50 call just last week. Fortunately for the hopeful punter, Buckaroo has been confirmed in the Melbourne Cup field, drawing barrier 12 and with star jockey Craig Williams in the saddle. The horse currently sits at about $9 to win and $3.50 to place in the top three — the exact outcome the punter needs.
Since the final few selections were placed in futures markets, there’s no option to cash out early. The bet must ride through to the end — meaning the punter will be watching Tuesday’s race with every heartbeat counting. When asked about the situation, he joked that he’d be “buying enough beers if this wins without anybody else knowing,” explaining why he prefers to stay anonymous.
Nick Conway, general manager of trading for Entain Australia & New Zealand, acknowledged that while bookmakers never enjoy paying out such massive sums, the story is simply part of the thrill of racing. “If someone can turn $7 into more than $700,000, then all we can do is pay him his dues — and the $700,000!” he said.
