Good morning, everyone! What a dramatic start to the weekend racing action, with Cheltenham, Uttoxeter, and Navan all facing major weather disruptions thanks to Storm Claudia. The conditions have been testing, to say the least, with heavy rainfall hitting Cheltenham on Friday and leaving the track officially described as heavy, soft in places. But after a tense morning inspection, racing at Cheltenham has been given the green light, much to the relief of racegoers and connections alike. The Paddy Power Gold Cup takes center stage today, kicking off a seven-race card at 12:35 pm. The forecast promises light drizzle early on but a largely dry day to follow.

Navan, unfortunately, hasn’t been as fortunate. Despite preparations and some high-profile horses like Marine Nationale, Kopek Des Bordes, and Final Demand being declared, the course was too waterlogged, forcing Saturday’s card to be postponed until Monday. Uttoxeter, on the other hand, passed its inspection with heavy ground across both chase and hurdles courses, ensuring a full card from 12:07 pm.

All eyes are on Cheltenham’s feature race, the Paddy Power Gold Cup, where Dan Skelton’s master plan has been executed flawlessly. Panic Attack dominated the field, delivering a brilliant performance for the red-hot yard, which has already produced four winners from six runners this season. The card was not without surprises, though, with Jagwar, last season’s festival winner, declared a non-runner due to the heavy ground. Riskintheground was also withdrawn, leaving Skelton with two strong chances, most notably Panic Attack. Other notable withdrawals included Issar d’Airy from the Gold Cup and Parchment from the Triumph Trial.

The Arkle Trial also provided plenty of excitement. Henry de Bromhead’s July Flower impressed on her chasing debut at Limerick and heads today’s Grade 2 feature as the market favorite. Be Aware, another Skelton-trained horse, also makes his chasing debut, adding extra intrigue to the race. Only six runners contested this trial, but with past winners and promising newcomers like Burdett Road and Stencil in the mix, it was anyone’s game.

Racing conditions have tested both horse and jockey, with Clerk of the Course Jon Pullin noting that the heavy ground will make today quite challenging. But seasoned jockey Sean Bowen has shown once again why he’s one of the best, with rides across the day attracting significant backing, especially on Theatre Native in the Gold Cup, whose odds shortened from 16-1 to 10-1 overnight.

Beyond Cheltenham, eyes are already on Monday’s rescheduled Navan card, promising action with Lulamba set for his chasing debut at Exeter, alongside Marine Nationale and Kopek Des Bordes in Ireland. It looks set to be a Monday packed with top-class racing and big names.

So, as the afternoon unfolds, it’s clear the Skeltons’ strategy has paid off handsomely, and Cheltenham has delivered drama, thrilling finishes, and plenty of talking points for racing fans everywhere. With heavy ground testing every connection, today’s races will provide clues for the rest of the season, and the excitement is far from over.
