Costco Recalls Nearly 1 Million Kirkland Wine Bottles Over Safety Risk

Hey, so here’s something important for anyone who shops at Costco or enjoys a glass of wine. Nearly a million bottles of a popular Kirkland wine have been recalled because of a surprising and serious safety risk. The wine in question is the Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, which was sold in green bottles with purple foil and a matching purple label. The recall affects bottles with the UPC code 196633883742 and Costco Item Number 1879870.

The recall was issued by F&F Wines International, which operates under the name Ethica Wines, after reports that some bottles were spontaneously shattering. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, these bottles “can break or shatter, posing a laceration hazard.” So far, there have been ten reports of bottles breaking, including one incident that caused an actual injury.

These bottles were sold in Costco stores across several states—including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin—between April and August of 2025. Each bottle was priced at around $8. Costco had actually alerted customers about the risk in September, warning them that unopened bottles could still shatter.

Consumers are being instructed to immediately stop using any of the recalled bottles. The recommendation is to safely dispose of them and contact Ethica Wines for instructions on how to receive a full refund from Costco. While the risk may seem unusual for a wine bottle, it’s a reminder that even everyday products can sometimes pose unexpected hazards.

If you have one of these bottles at home, it’s best not to take any chances. The recall highlights how seriously safety concerns are taken when it comes to consumer products, and it’s a good example of companies acting quickly to protect their customers. So, if you’re a Kirkland Prosecco fan, check your bottles, follow the instructions, and make sure you stay safe.

This recall may be inconvenient, but it’s reassuring to see Costco and Ethica Wines prioritizing safety over sales. After all, a glass of wine should never come with a risk of injury.
