Deadly Explosion Rocks Delhi’s Red Fort Area, At Least Eight Killed
A tragic and shocking scene unfolded in Delhi on Monday evening when a car exploded near the iconic Red Fort, killing at least eight people and injuring around twenty others. The incident, which happened just before 7 p.m. local time, sent waves of panic through one of the city’s busiest and most historic areas.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, the explosion took place when a Hyundai i20 stopped at a red light near the Red Fort metro station. The car, which was reportedly carrying three people, suddenly burst into flames, damaging several nearby vehicles and causing chaos on the streets. Dozens of fire engines and ambulances rushed to the spot as terrified bystanders tried to rescue those trapped in the burning vehicles.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror and confusion. One local businessman who was near the area said he saw cars engulfed in flames and people running for safety. Another witness told reporters he heard a massive explosion that shook nearby buildings. “It felt like everything froze for a few seconds, and then everyone started screaming and running,” he recalled.

Police officials have said that the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Authorities are “exploring all possibilities,” with teams from the National Security Guard (NSG), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and forensic experts already on-site. The federal Home Minister, Amit Shah, visited the blast location and a nearby hospital, stating that no angle will be ignored and that a thorough investigation is underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and that assistance was being provided to the injured. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also called the news “heartbreaking,” offering prayers for the victims and their families.
The explosion took place in one of Delhi’s most heavily visited tourist areas. The Red Fort, or Lal Qila, built in the 17th century, is not only a major heritage site but also the venue for India’s annual Independence Day address by the Prime Minister. Given its symbolic importance, security agencies have placed the surrounding regions, including Mumbai and the bordering state of Uttar Pradesh, on high alert.
By late evening, security forces including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had sealed off the area. Sensitive locations, religious sites, and border zones in northern India were being patrolled more heavily as a precaution.
For now, the cause of the explosion remains unclear, but the nation watches anxiously as investigators piece together what led to this devastating event in the heart of India’s capital.
