DWP Warning: Why Older People Must Update Attendance Allowance Details
Many older people across the UK rely on Attendance Allowance — a vital support from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) — but few may realise that failing to update their circumstances could put their payments at risk. More than 1.7 million pensioners currently receive this non-means-tested benefit, designed to help with the extra costs that come with disabilities or long-term health conditions. Depending on individual needs, recipients get either £73.90 or £110.40 every week, paid every four weeks, meaning up to £441.60 could land in your account each pay period.
The allowance is available to people of State Pension age who need help with personal care — whether that’s getting dressed, eating, bathing, or moving around safely. What’s important to remember, though, is that this benefit isn’t automatic once approved. Claimants are required to keep the DWP updated about any changes in their circumstances that might affect their entitlement.
For instance, if your health condition improves or worsens, or if the level of help you require changes, this must be reported immediately. The same applies if you go into hospital or a care home, move house, change bank details, or even plan to leave the country for more than four weeks. Failing to report such changes could result in overpayments — or worse, penalties and legal action. The DWP clearly warns that giving incorrect information or withholding updates could lead to court proceedings or fines.

In Scotland, new Attendance Allowance claims have now been replaced by the Pension Age Disability Payment under Social Security Scotland , though current claimants still need to report changes directly to the DWP until the full system transfer is complete later this year.
Many may not realise just how broad the eligibility for Attendance Allowance is. It supports those with both physical and mental health conditions, including arthritis, heart disease, Parkinson’s, dementia, and even sensory issues like deafness or blindness. There’s also help available for people experiencing frailty, chronic pain, or neurological disorders.
What’s more, Attendance Allowance isn’t means-tested or taxed. That means your savings, pension, or income won’t reduce what you receive, and the payments don’t affect your State Pension. In fact, receiving Attendance Allowance can even increase other benefits such as Pension Credit , Housing Benefit , or Council Tax Reduction .
So, if you or someone you know is claiming Attendance Allowance, make sure all details stay up to date. The Attendance Allowance helpline — 0800 731 0122 — is available Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, for any questions or updates. Keeping the DWP informed not only ensures payments continue smoothly but also helps older people receive the right level of support to stay independent for as long as possible.
