European Night Turns Sour for Scottish Clubs
It was a difficult night for Scottish football in Europe, as none of the three clubs in action managed to secure a win. The Europa League and Conference League matches brought frustration across the board — with Rangers falling to Roma, Celtic outplayed by Midtjylland, and Aberdeen held to a goalless draw by AEK Larnaca.
At Ibrox, Rangers’ struggles in Europe continued. The atmosphere began with hope, but it quickly faded as Roma took control early on. MatÃas Soulé opened the scoring for the Italian side just 13 minutes into the match, heading home from close range after a corner. Not long after, Lorenzo Pellegrini doubled Roma’s lead with a composed finish in the 36th minute. By halftime, the damage was done. Despite some improved play from Rangers in the second half, they couldn’t find a breakthrough. The match ended 2–0 in Roma’s favor — handing Rangers their seventh straight European defeat, a new club record.

The statistics made grim reading for the home fans. Rangers had only two shots on target and just 39% possession, while Roma looked composed and efficient. The Ibrox crowd began to thin before the final whistle, with many fans leaving early after realizing their team was well beaten. Manager Danny Rohl admitted afterward that his side lacked sharpness in key moments but remained confident that progress will come with time. Goalkeeper Jack Butland echoed similar thoughts, saying the team made things “a difficult task” by gifting Roma easy chances.
Over in Denmark, things didn’t go much better for Celtic. Midtjylland showed their strength with a 3–1 victory, leaving Celtic with just one win from four Europa League matches. Despite flashes of promise, Celtic were outclassed for much of the game, and their hopes of advancing now hang in the balance.
Meanwhile, in the Conference League, Aberdeen fought hard but couldn’t find a way past AEK Larnaca, settling for a 0–0 draw. It was a result that summed up the evening — effort without reward.
Between Celtic, Rangers, and Aberdeen, only five shots on target were registered across all three matches. That statistic alone says a lot about the gulf in quality between Scottish clubs and their European opponents right now.
It was a sobering reminder that competing at the continental level remains a huge challenge. For Rangers, the search for their first Europa League point goes on. Celtic must regroup quickly, while Aberdeen will take some comfort in avoiding defeat. Still, for Scottish football fans, Thursday night was one to forget.
