Paul DePodesta Set to Lead Rockies’ Baseball Revival
It looks like one of the most fascinating front-office moves in recent baseball history is about to happen — Paul DePodesta, yes, that Paul DePodesta from “Moneyball” fame, is expected to take over as the head of baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies. Multiple reports suggest that the official announcement could come as soon as Friday, just before the MLB General Managers Meetings kick off in Las Vegas.
Now, this is a big deal — not only because of DePodesta’s unique career path, but also because the Rockies have been in a deep slump. After a disastrous 2025 season, where they finished with an almost unthinkable 43-119 record, the franchise has been desperate for a new direction. Bill Schmidt, their previous general manager, stepped down after more than two decades in the organization, paving the way for an outsider — something the Rockies haven’t done since 1999.

DePodesta, who’s currently the chief strategy officer for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, made his name in baseball as one of the key architects behind the Oakland Athletics’ early 2000s “Moneyball” revolution. Working alongside Billy Beane, he helped pioneer the use of data and analytics to find undervalued players and compete with teams that had much bigger budgets. That innovative thinking was so influential that his character, played by Jonah Hill, became a cultural touchstone in the Oscar-nominated film Moneyball .
His baseball résumé is extensive. He started as an intern with the Cleveland Indians back in 1996, moved on to become an assistant general manager under Beane with the Athletics, and later became the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004. Though that stint was short-lived, DePodesta went on to hold key front-office roles with the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets before making a surprising career shift to football in 2016.
In Cleveland, DePodesta was credited with helping rebuild the Browns’ roster and strategy, even though he wasn’t directly in charge of player decisions. Despite some controversial moments, like the much-criticized Deshaun Watson trade, he was known for his analytical approach and long-term vision — qualities the Rockies seem to be seeking as they look to modernize their front office.
For DePodesta, this move marks a return to his baseball roots after nearly a decade in the NFL. And for the Rockies, it represents a bold attempt to finally shake off years of frustration and stagnation. If his “Moneyball” mindset takes hold in Denver, the Rockies might just be setting the stage for one of the most intriguing rebuilds in Major League Baseball.
