Fire at Exeter City Stadium Under Investigation
A fire broke out at Exeter City Football Club’s stadium last night, prompting a swift response from firefighters and an ongoing investigation. The blaze was first spotted around 10 PM GMT near the Well Street end of St James Park, where smoke was seen billowing from a portacabin. Officials from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue later confirmed that the fire originated in an electrical unit before spreading to a temporary building on the grounds.
Firefighters were quickly on the scene, initially sending three crews, followed by two more as the flames threatened to reach one of the stadium’s stands. Using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets, the crews worked to prevent the fire from escalating. By midnight, the fire had been fully extinguished, and ventilation fans were deployed to clear lingering smoke. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident.

Exeter City Football Club confirmed that the temporary building affected housed the stadium’s control room. A small area of the stadium sustained damage due to the fire. A club spokesperson expressed gratitude toward the public who reported the incident and praised the rapid efforts of the fire crews, noting that their prompt action prevented further damage. “We will be assessing the damage today and will update when we have more information,” the spokesperson added.
Authorities have announced that a full investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted during daylight hours. The fire service emphasized that the situation was contained efficiently, and there was no threat to spectators or larger parts of the stadium.
The incident has drawn attention to the importance of fire safety measures in sports venues, especially when temporary structures are in use. While Exeter City fans and staff were spared serious harm, the fire serves as a reminder of how quickly such situations can develop and the vital role of emergency services.
