Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan Collapses After Mountain Slope Failure
Earlier this week, a serious incident occurred on National Highway 317 in Sichuan province, China, when a section of the highway, including the Hongqi Bridge, collapsed. The collapse was triggered by a mountain slope failure, which had been detected a day earlier, and thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far.
The first warning signs appeared on Monday, when authorities noticed that the slope on the right bank of the Hongqi Bridge section in Maerkang city was showing signs of deformation. During a local inspection at 5:25 pm, potential risks were officially identified. The moment the danger was confirmed, local authorities acted swiftly, immediately activating an emergency response. Teams from public security, transportation, and natural resources departments were dispatched to the site to manage the situation. By 11:00 pm, all vehicles that had been stranded in the area were safely evacuated, and warning signs were set up to prevent unauthorized access. A traffic control notice was also issued to alert the public, and these timely measures ensured that no injuries occurred.

The situation worsened the following day. As the slope deformation intensified, a landslide was triggered, causing the roadbed beneath the Hongqi Bridge and the approach sections to collapse. Videos shared online show massive clouds of dust and smoke rising from the river below, illustrating the scale of the collapse. The bridge piers and decks were destroyed in the incident, leaving a significant portion of the highway impassable.
Authorities have not yet provided a timeline for reopening the highway. In the meantime, all incoming and outgoing traffic is required to follow the designated detour routes outlined in official notices. This collapse comes just months after the bridge’s construction was completed earlier this year, highlighting the challenges of maintaining infrastructure in mountainous regions prone to terrain shifts and landslides.
Local authorities continue to monitor the site closely, and emergency teams remain on standby to address any further developments.
