"Line of Duty" to Return for Seventh Series After Five-Year Hiatus
Exciting news for fans of the hit police drama Line of Duty —it's officially returning for a seventh season after a five-year break. The BBC confirmed that the iconic series will begin filming next spring in Belfast, with all the fan-favorite stars—Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar—reprising their roles. The upcoming season will once again be penned by creator Jed Mercurio, who has promised even more thrilling, high-stakes drama as the series continues its investigation into police corruption.
The announcement has been a long time coming, with rumors swirling about the show’s return since the conclusion of season six in 2021. The finale, which revealed the identity of the elusive “H,” drew over 17 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched TV episodes in British history. Yet, despite massive speculation, neither Mercurio nor the BBC had officially confirmed a new series until now.

The seventh season will pick up after the disbandment of the AC-12 unit, which will now be rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards. Steve Arnott (Compston), Kate Fleming (McClure), and Ted Hastings (Dunbar) are back in action, though their work has never been more difficult. The trio is tasked with their most sensitive case yet, which involves a new character, Detective Inspector Dominic Gough. Gough is a celebrated officer known for his success in taking down organized crime. However, he stands accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator. But as with most Line of Duty storylines, there may be more to this case than meets the eye, and it could all be part of a larger, more dangerous threat lurking in the shadows.
Mercurio expressed his excitement about the show's return, acknowledging the loyal fanbase who have supported AC-12 through its six previous seasons. "We’re privileged to have had so many of you follow the ups and downs of AC-12, and we couldn’t be more delighted to be returning for a seventh," he said. "Corruption in this country is supposed to have come to an end while Line of Duty was off-air, so I’ve been forced to use my imagination."
Compston, who plays Steve Arnott, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for getting back to work. "Not only in terms of the show’s success but the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with, I now call some of my closest friends," he said. "I can’t wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together." McClure echoed the sentiment, expressing her excitement about reuniting with the team. "It goes without saying I’m so excited Line of Duty is back! Can’t wait to work with Jed, Martin, and Adrian again," she said.
The show has become a cultural phenomenon since its debut in 2012, drawing in big-name guest stars like Stephen Graham, Thandiwe Newton, and Kelly Macdonald. With filming set to begin next year, the anticipation for what’s to come is already building, and fans are eagerly awaiting the twists and turns that are sure to unfold in season seven. Stay tuned for more updates as filming begins!
