Toyota and Lexus Recall Over 130,000 Vehicles for Camera Issue

There’s some important news for Toyota and Lexus owners in Australia. The companies have issued a recall affecting more than 130,000 vehicles after identifying a potential fault with the surround-view camera system. This issue has been described as a 'customer service exercise,' which means it isn’t classified as a formal safety recall, but it still requires owners to bring their cars in for inspection and repair.

The vehicles involved are late-model Toyota and Lexus cars built between 2021 and 2025. Popular Toyota models affected include the RAV4, LandCruiser 300 Series, LandCruiser Prado, Corolla Cross, Camry, and Kluger. On the Lexus side, affected models include the NX, RX, and LX. In total, 108,862 Toyota vehicles and 27,490 Lexus vehicles are part of this recall, amounting to 136,352 cars across Australia.

The problem stems from the software in the Parking Assist ECU, a component of the Panoramic View Monitor system. This system is responsible for displaying the rear-view camera image. If the issue occurs, the rear-view image may freeze briefly when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, or it may not display at all the next time the ignition is turned on, particularly if the ignition is turned on and off within a specific timeframe.

Toyota and Lexus have confirmed that the fix is straightforward. Dealers will reprogram the parking assist ECU free of charge, a process that typically takes around one hour. However, owners are advised that depending on dealer schedules, their vehicle may need to be available for a longer period.

To ensure owners are aware, Toyota and Lexus will contact those affected directly by mail, asking them to schedule an appointment with their nearest dealer. Toyota owners can call 1800 387 366, and Lexus owners can call 1800 023 009 for assistance during business hours.

While this recall is focused on customer service rather than safety, it’s a reminder of the importance of keeping your vehicle’s technology up to date. Owners experiencing any issues with their backup or surround-view cameras are strongly encouraged to take action promptly to avoid any potential inconvenience or safety concerns while driving.

In summary, if you own a recent Toyota or Lexus model listed in this recall, it’s important to get in touch with your dealer soon to have your vehicle’s software updated and ensure the camera system works as intended. This simple service will restore the full functionality of the parking assist system and give you peace of mind behind the wheel.
