Tulsa King Faces Creative Shake-Up Ahead of Season 4
“Tulsa King” has certainly captured attention with its gripping storylines and Sylvester Stallone’s standout performance. However, as the show gears up for its fourth season, behind-the-scenes drama is overshadowing the usual buzz. Despite its success and Paramount’s backing, there’s one major issue going into the new season: a lack of clear creative leadership.
For the past few seasons, the show has experienced notable turnover in its showrunner role. Season 1 saw Terence Winter at the helm, but by the time Season 2 rolled around, he had departed, leaving the role to be filled by other producers. In Season 3, Dave Erickson took over but clashed with Stallone over the direction of the show, leading to his exit. Winter returned for Season 4, but only as the head writer and executive producer, not as the on-set leader. This has left the production without a formal showrunner, which has raised questions about the series’ creative direction.

According to sources, Scott Stone, an executive at 101 Studios, has stepped in as the de facto showrunner. While Stone is overseeing production in Atlanta, he, along with unit production managers Rebecca Rivo and Christian Agypt, is not involved in the writing or directing process. This lack of a unified creative force has caused tension on set, especially among the crew. Some members, including Freddie Poole, the show’s Emmy-nominated stunt coordinator, have expressed concerns about the lack of leadership, especially after a significant crew shake-up. Poole was one of 26 crew members let go just days before production began. The abrupt way many learned they were being replaced—through job listings rather than direct communication—has left many feeling disheartened and unappreciated.
It’s not uncommon for shows to experience crew turnover between seasons, but the absence of a formal showrunner has complicated matters. A lack of leadership on set can create confusion, as different departments work without clear direction. As one source put it, it’s been disorienting to see a studio executive take such a central role on a show with such a large, creative ensemble.
Despite these setbacks, “Tulsa King” continues to enjoy strong viewership, and fans can expect new developments in Season 4. Sylvester Stallone’s character, Dwight “The General” Manfredi, will continue to navigate the dangers of Tulsa’s criminal underworld, with the addition of new faces, such as Gretchen Mol, joining the cast in a prominent role. Stallone, ever the optimist, has expressed his excitement for the new season, emphasizing that his character won’t be taken down easily, even as his empire grows more dangerous.
However, the turmoil behind the scenes raises questions about the future stability of the show. The lack of a creative lead could leave the series feeling directionless, even as its storylines continue to unfold on-screen. Fans will have to wait and see if “Tulsa King” can maintain its momentum without the steadying hand of a dedicated showrunner.
