Blaze Erupts at Sydney Petrol Station, Residents Flee and Later Return Home

So, a pretty dramatic scene unfolded in Sydney’s south-west when a petrol station in Fairfield suddenly went up in flames, sending huge plumes of thick black smoke into the sky. It all happened around lunchtime, and the fire was reported at the Metro Petroleum station on Hamilton Road. Within minutes, what started as a regular day turned into a fast-moving emergency.

More than 50 firefighters were called in, and about 13 fire trucks, including HAZMAT units, rushed to the scene. Initially, only three trucks were dispatched, but as crews got closer, the massive cloud of smoke was spotted, and more resources were immediately requested. By the time they arrived, the blaze had already taken hold of the roof, and aerial footage later showed just how intense those flames were. Firefighters had to attack the fire from multiple angles just to get it under control.

People nearby were caught off guard too. One driver, Richard Duque, had his car completely destroyed in the fire. He said he had just stepped inside the station to pay when everything suddenly escalated. He described the moment as incredibly quick—so quick, in fact, that he knew he had no choice but to leave the car behind and run for safety.

Residents living next door were also thrown into chaos. Two unit blocks had to be evacuated because the smoke was being pushed straight toward them by strong winds. Many described the moment as panicked, saying they warned their neighbours and rushed out as emergency crews moved in. Fortunately, after firefighters cooled down a number of gas cylinders that had been involved in the fire, atmospheric gas testing was carried out, and roughly 50 evacuated residents were later allowed to return home.

Despite how fierce and chaotic the fire appeared, there were no reports of injuries, which is remarkable considering how quickly the situation escalated. The fire was finally extinguished later in the afternoon, and Hamilton Road, which had been closed for several hours, was eventually reopened.

As of now, the exact cause of the fire is still being investigated. Fire and Rescue NSW crews are continuing to monitor the gas cylinders remotely, and investigators will work with police if needed to determine exactly what sparked the blaze. But for Fairfield locals, it was certainly an afternoon they won’t forget anytime soon.
