Fast-Moving Warnbro Bushfire Puts Perth’s Southern Suburbs on High Alert
Right now, there’s a serious bushfire situation unfolding in Perth’s southern suburbs, and it’s one that residents are being urged to take very seriously. A “prepare to leave” warning has been issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for parts of Cooloongup, Safety Bay, Waikiki and Warnbro, as firefighters continue battling a fast-moving blaze under changing conditions.
The alert was issued just before 8pm on Monday evening, with DFES warning that lives and homes could be at risk. The fire has been burning aggressively and is moving in a north-westerly direction, making its behaviour unpredictable. Because of that, people in the affected areas have been told to make decisions early, especially if leaving is part of their bushfire survival plan.

Several major roads have already been closed to keep people out of danger. Safety Bay Road has been shut between Baldivis Road and Ennis Avenue, while parts of Ennis Avenue itself are also closed. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area entirely, slow down if nearby, and allow emergency crews to do their work without interference.
The scale of the fire has been confronting. Videos shared on social media show large flames and thick smoke near Safety Bay Road, giving a clear sense of just how intense the situation has become. Fire crews from Rockingham and surrounding areas have been deployed, with multiple teams working near Warnbro train station and Lake Cooloongup to contain the blaze.
Public transport has also been disrupted. Warnbro Station has been closed due to the fire, with trains running only between Rockingham and Perth. Replacement buses are operating between Rockingham and Mandurah, but they are not stopping at Warnbro, adding to the disruption for commuters.
DFES has made it clear that anyone planning to leave should do so immediately. Residents are being advised to take an emergency kit that includes essentials like medications, phones, important documents, protective clothing, and a battery-powered radio. For those staying, homes should be sealed as much as possible to keep smoke out, evaporative air conditioners turned off, and properties actively monitored for embers and spot fires.
As conditions continue to change, authorities are stressing that warnings can escalate quickly. The message is simple but urgent: stay alert, follow official advice, and act early. Fires like this can move fast, and preparation right now could make all the difference.
