Highway 97 Crash Leaves One Person in Serious Condition
So, let me walk you through what happened on Highway 97, because this incident has really drawn a lot of attention across northeastern B.C., and for good reason. A major crash took place on December 8th in the Pink Mountain area, right along the 25400 block of the Alaska Highway. The call came in just after 12:30 p.m., and from that moment on, the situation escalated quickly.
BC Emergency Health Services was immediately dispatched, and according to their paramedic public information officer, Brian Twaites, the response was significant. Three ground ambulances were sent out, each staffed with primary care paramedics. On top of that, an air ambulance carrying a critical care team was deployed as well. That alone tells you how serious the situation was. When air support gets involved, it’s usually because the medical urgency is incredibly high.

When paramedics arrived, emergency treatment had to be given right on the scene. The patient involved was in serious condition, and everything from stabilization to preparing for transport had to be done under those harsh winter conditions that northern B.C. roads are known for. The person was first taken by ground ambulance, then transferred to the air ambulance to get them to hospital as quickly as possible. It’s one of those moments where every second matters, and you can almost imagine the urgency around that scene.
Because of the crash, Highway 97 ended up being closed for quite a long stretch — not just for a few hours, but through the afternoon, overnight, and even into the next morning. Drivers in the area faced significant delays, and the already tough winter driving conditions only added to the challenge. Blowing snow and low visibility had been reported across the region, and other accidents were popping up along nearby stretches of highway as well. It was one of those days when the road conditions were working against everyone.
Even beyond Pink Mountain, reports were coming in about accidents near Buckinghorse River, close to Wonowon, and further down in the Pine Pass near Chetwynd. Drivers were advised to watch for wildlife, heavy snow, and crews working on the roads. So the entire corridor was dealing with difficult weather layered on top of emergency responses.
At this point, authorities say they’ll release more updates as they learn more. For now, the focus remains on the individual who was transported to hospital and on keeping the region’s roadways as safe as possible in these unpredictable conditions.
