Nationwide Customers Face Deadline to Claim £50 Thank You Bonus

There’s an important reminder going out right now for Nationwide Building Society members, and it’s one that could mean the difference between pocketing a free £50 or missing out entirely. Millions of customers were included in a major payout scheme earlier this year, but thousands are now being urged to act quickly before the window closes for good.

The payment was part of what Nationwide called “The Big Nationwide Thank You,” a one-off initiative launched after the building society successfully completed its takeover of Virgin Money. As a gesture of appreciation, around 12 million eligible members were each awarded £50, making the scheme one of the largest customer reward payouts ever seen in the mutual banking sector. In total, the programme cost more than £600 million.

Most customers received the money automatically. For many, the £50 was paid directly into their Nationwide current account, savings account, or into the bank account linked to their mortgage Direct Debit. However, a significant number of members were sent cheques through the post instead. And this is where the urgency comes in.

Nationwide has confirmed that any customer who received a cheque must pay it in by January 1, 2026. If that deadline is missed, the £50 bonus will be lost, and the cheque will no longer be valid. With New Year’s Day fast approaching, customers are being warned not to leave it until the last minute, especially if the cheque has been forgotten, misplaced, or set aside.

To qualify for the payment, members needed to hold Nationwide membership as of September 30, 2024, and still be a member when payments were processed. On top of that, at least one additional condition had to be met in the previous 12 months. This included having £100 or more across Nationwide current or savings accounts, owing at least £100 on a Nationwide residential mortgage, completing a qualifying transaction, or switching to a Nationwide current account using the official switch service during a specific period.

Nationwide has stressed that all payments have now been issued. So, if someone believes they were eligible but hasn’t received anything, it may be down to outdated contact details or a change in residency. Customers in that situation are being encouraged to check their details through online banking, the mobile app, or by visiting a branch before the deadline.

It’s also worth noting that this £50 payment is completely separate from Nationwide’s Fairer Share scheme, which has paid out £100 to qualifying members in recent years. This really was an extra thank-you, but only for those who act in time.
