His parents, Mohamed Fateh Al Ahmed and Malakeh Hasan Al Ahmed, had only arrived in Sydney from Syria a few months ago. They had been separated from their son since he moved to Australia in 2006, and the phone call telling them he had been shot was devastating. His mother said she initially thought it had been an accident, only to later understand the full scale of what he had done.
They described their son as someone who would help anyone, without thinking about nationality, religion, or background. In their words, he didn’t stop to consider who he was saving. He simply saw human beings in danger and acted.
The attack claimed at least 15 lives, with victims ranging in age from just 10 years old to 87. Dozens more were injured. Police have since said that lives were saved because of the bravery shown not only by officers, but by civilians like Ahmed who took immediate action in an unthinkably chaotic situation.
