Satellite Images Raise New Questions After Ukraine Claims Submarine Strike
Right now, a lot of attention is being drawn to fresh satellite images that appear to show damage at a Russian naval port, following Ukraine’s claim that it carried out a daring underwater drone attack on a Russian submarine. The location at the centre of this story is Novorossiysk, a key Russian port city on the Black Sea, and what’s emerging from the images is adding a new layer of uncertainty to an already tense situation.
According to Ukrainian officials, the attack was carried out earlier this week using an underwater drone, targeting a submarine that was moored at a pier inside the port. In the days that followed, new satellite imagery began to circulate, and analysts quickly noticed something unusual. Damage could clearly be seen along part of the quay where submarines had previously been docked. Before the alleged strike, three submarines were visible inside the quay, surrounded by other Russian naval vessels. After the incident, only one submarine remained inside, positioned close to an area that appeared heavily damaged.

From their perspective, the situation is being played down, and the imagery alone is not being acknowledged as proof of a successful Ukrainian strike.
What makes this story particularly significant is not just the physical damage that may or may not have occurred, but what it represents strategically. If an underwater drone was indeed able to reach a submarine inside a protected port, it would highlight a growing vulnerability in naval defences. The use of unmanned systems has already reshaped parts of the conflict, and this incident is being seen as another example of how modern warfare is evolving rapidly.
