Why NBA Fans Won’t Find Games on NBC Tonight

If you turned on NBC tonight expecting to catch some NBA action and found none, you’re definitely not alone. A lot of fans were surprised, and maybe even a little frustrated, to see basketball missing from its usual Tuesday night slot. But the reason behind it is actually pretty simple, and thankfully, it’s only a temporary pause.

Right now, the NBA on NBC isn’t gone, it’s just taking a short holiday break. With December rolling in and the festive season kicking off, NBC has shifted its focus toward holiday programming for a couple of weeks. That means the usual Coast 2 Coast Tuesday NBA coverage isn’t airing tonight, Tuesday, December 9, or even next week on December 16. Instead of live basketball, viewers are being treated to classic seasonal specials, including Frosty the Snowman, Shrek the Halls, and A Motown Christmas, which is being hosted by Smokey Robinson and Halle Bailey. So while the hardwood is quiet on NBC, the holiday vibes are definitely turned up.

The good news is that NBA coverage hasn’t disappeared entirely. It’s just been rearranged. Peacock NBA Monday is still going strong, and next week, on December 15, fans will get a major doubleheader exclusively on Peacock. The early game features the Detroit Pistons visiting the Boston Celtics. The Pistons have been red-hot in the Eastern Conference, but they’ll be tested by a Celtics team that remains the most successful franchise in NBA history and is fresh off its 2024 championship run.

Later that same night, the Denver Nuggets will host the Houston Rockets. Denver’s championship core, led by Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, is still clicking, and this matchup promises plenty of star power and intensity. Those two teams won’t be gone for long either, because Coast 2 Coast Tuesday officially returns on December 23. That night will feature the Nuggets facing the Dallas Mavericks, followed by the Rockets taking on the Los Angeles Clippers.

So while there are no NBA games on NBC tonight, it’s not a cause for panic. The schedule has simply been adjusted to make room for holiday programming. The NBA is still very much back on NBC and Peacock this season, with weekly games, marquee matchups, and big-name stars lining up once the holiday pause wraps up. For now, it’s a short break, a bit of festive fun, and then basketball will be right back where fans expect it to be.
