Carrion Vael Drop a Brutal New Album That Pushes Modern Death Metal to the Edge

Good evening and let’s turn our attention to new music making serious noise in the metal world right now.

Technical death metal outfit Carrion Vael are back and they’re not easing into 2026. Their new album, Slay Utterly, has officially arrived and it’s already sparking strong reactions across the heavy music community. This is the band’s fifth full-length release in less than a decade, a pace that few extreme metal bands can maintain and it speaks to their relentless drive.

Carrion Vael come out of Richmond, Indiana and since their 2017 debut, they’ve carved out a reputation for blending speed, melody and technical precision. On Slay Utterly, that formula is pushed even further. The album is packed with sharp, whiplash riffs, rapid-fire drumming and layered vocals that swing between harsh aggression and clean, melodic lines.

What makes this release stand out is its dark thematic core. While not labeled as a concept album outright, each track dives into grim stories inspired by serial killers, sometimes from the perspective of the killer, sometimes from the victim. That idea is reflected in the vocal contrasts and shifting moods, giving the record an unsettling edge without spelling everything out.

Musically, the band sounds locked in. The guitars race and shimmer, often exploding into intricate solos that feel both violent and precise. The drums barely let up, driving the album forward with mechanical intensity. Vocally, there’s impressive range here, from deep roars to soaring clean passages that add tension and release throughout the record. Subtle orchestral touches also creep in, expanding the sound and hinting at where the band might go next.

That said, Slay Utterly isn’t without friction. The production is dense and extremely loud and at times it feels compressed to the point where certain details struggle to breathe. For some listeners, that raw intensity will add to the chaos. For others, it may dull the impact of what’s clearly passionate and skilled playing. There are also moments where the band’s influences show a little too clearly, occasionally blurring their own identity.

Still, the bigger picture is hard to ignore. Carrion Vael have delivered a fierce, polished and uncompromising album that reinforces their place in modern death metal. With the release also comes a new music video for “Truth or Consequences” and a run of live shows supporting the album, putting this material directly in front of fans.

Slay Utterly is out now via Unique Leader Records and whether you’re a longtime follower or just discovering Carrion Vael, this is a release that demands attention.
