Neil McCann Takes Charge at Kilmarnock in a Crucial Premiership Moment
There’s been a major development at Rugby Park, and it’s one that could shape Kilmarnock’s season in a big way. Neil McCann has officially been appointed as the club’s new manager, with Billy Dodds coming in alongside him as assistant. Both men have agreed contracts that will keep them at the club until the summer of 2028, signalling a long-term commitment at a time when stability is badly needed.
This appointment comes after Stuart Kettlewell was dismissed following a difficult run of form, with just six wins from 25 matches. In the interim, under-19s coach Kris Doolan was asked to steady the ship, overseeing four matches and picking up a single point. While the effort was appreciated, it was clear that a permanent solution was required quickly, especially with Kilmarnock sitting second bottom in the Scottish Premiership.

McCann arrives with a deep understanding of Scottish football, something the Kilmarnock board clearly valued. His previous managerial spells at Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle were seen as important experience, particularly in handling pressure situations. He’s also well known for his work in the media, but now the focus shifts firmly back to the dugout. It was felt that his leadership qualities and tactical knowledge made him the right fit for the challenge ahead.
Billy Dodds’ appointment as assistant adds another layer of familiarity and experience. The pair have worked together before, most recently as part of Barry Ferguson’s interim management team at Rangers last season. Dodds has also managed Inverness Caledonian Thistle himself and previously served as an assistant at Ross County, so the Scottish league is no mystery to him. That existing working relationship between McCann and Dodds is expected to help the transition happen more smoothly.
In a club statement, Kilmarnock’s board made it clear how carefully this decision was handled. It was stressed that the right balance of experience, character, and understanding of the club’s culture was needed. Confidence was expressed that the players will respond positively to the clarity, belief, and ambition the new management team is expected to bring.
The timing is critical. Kilmarnock face a huge test away at Livingston, a side sitting four points below them but with a game in hand. The margin for error is slim, and every match now carries extra weight. For McCann and Dodds, the task is clear: steady the club, lift performances, and do what needs to be done to keep Kilmarnock competing in the Scottish Premiership. A new chapter has begun, and all eyes will be on how it unfolds.
