Delhi High Court Clears Dhurandhar 2 OTT Release Amid Copyright Battle
A major legal decision is now reshaping the digital release path for one of India’s most closely watched films, as the court in the capital steps in with a ruling that balances creative rights, financial stakes and the future of streaming cinema.
The spotlight is firmly on Dhurandhar: The Revenge, as the Delhi High Court has allowed its OTT release despite an ongoing copyright dispute involving music rights. The case centers around allegations that portions of the classic 1989 track from Tridev, particularly “Tirchhi Topiwale,” were used without proper authorization. The dispute has drawn in production houses linked to T-Series and Trimurti Films, creating a high-profile legal clash in the entertainment industry.
At the heart of the controversy is whether the film should be blocked from digital streaming because of the unresolved claims. The court, however, rejected the request to stop the OTT release, pointing out that the movie had already been released in theatres earlier with the same music content. According to the court’s reasoning, preventing the digital release at this stage would create an inconsistent outcome, especially after audiences have already seen the theatrical version.

The bench also indicated that the matter can still be resolved through compensation if infringement is eventually proven. As part of the proceedings, T-Series has been directed to deposit ₹50 lakh while the case continues, keeping the financial accountability aspect open.
The court further noted that the filmmakers, including director Aditya Dhar, had invested significant resources based on prior agreements and should not be pushed into major losses midway through legal proceedings. Mediation had earlier been attempted but reportedly failed, leaving the issue to continue in court.
On the release front, the film has already begun its staggered digital rollout. An uncut international version has been made available on Netflix in select regions, while the India release is scheduled on JioHotstar with a prime-time premiere window in early June.
Featuring a large ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, along with several major stars from Indian cinema, the film continues to draw attention not just for its storytelling but now also for its legal and industry implications.
