Salford’s 117th-Minute Drama Breaks Grimsby Hearts in Play-Off Thriller
Wembley is now just one game away for Salford City, after one of the most dramatic nights the League Two play-offs have delivered this season. A match that looked finished more than once suddenly exploded into chaos, tension and heartbreak, before Kallum Cesay struck deep into extra time to send Salford through with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Grimsby Town.
This was football at its rawest. Pressure everywhere, exhausted players and two clubs fighting for a chance to move closer to promotion and a completely different future.
Salford came into the second leg with a narrow advantage from the first meeting and for long periods it looked like they had complete control. When Dan Udoh fired them ahead early in the second half, the home crowd believed the job was done. At that point, Salford were two goals clear on aggregate and Grimsby suddenly looked finished.
But play-off football has a way of changing everything in minutes.

Grimsby refused to disappear. Kieran Green’s header gave the visitors hope and then the momentum shifted completely. Jaze Kabia added another goal just minutes later, leveling the tie on aggregate and silencing the stadium. Suddenly Salford looked nervous, Grimsby looked fearless and the entire match turned into a test of mentality.
Extra time became a battle of survival. Players cramped up, tackles flew in and every attack felt like it could decide the season. Then came the moment that may define Salford’s campaign. In the 117th minute, Cesay reacted inside the box and forced the ball home from close range. The stadium erupted, the bench emptied and Grimsby’s incredible comeback was over in an instant.
For Salford City, this is another major step in a project that has drawn attention across English football for years. The club, backed by members of Manchester United’s famous Class of ’92, has invested heavily to climb the football pyramid. Reaching Wembley now puts them within touching distance of another promotion and potentially a place in League One.
For Grimsby Town, the pain will be enormous. They came within minutes of completing one of the great play-off turnarounds, only to lose it at the very end. But their fight and resilience across this tie showed exactly why the play-offs remain one of the most emotional spectacles in football.
And now the spotlight moves to Wembley, where Salford’s biggest test still awaits. Stay with us for continuing coverage, reaction and every major development as the road to promotion reaches its final chapter.
