Brewers vs Rockies: Sproat Under Pressure at Coors Field

We're heading to Denver tonight where the Colorado Rockies are set to host the Milwaukee Brewers for the start of a weekend series. After a decent showing against the Los Angeles Angels, taking two out of three games, the Rockies are returning to Coors Field. This homestand is crucial, especially with the Chicago Cubs, who were once considered division favourites, now struggling significantly, having lost ten games in a row and dropping to fourth place. The Brewers, meanwhile, have been capitalizing on the Cubs' misfortunes and they'll be looking to continue that momentum against Colorado.

The focus for tonight's opener is definitely on the pitching matchup and specifically on Milwaukee's right-hander, Brandon Sproat. He's having a tough season so far, with a 1-4 record and a 6.24 ERA. His last outing against the Houston Astros was particularly rough, giving up six runs in just over four innings. Manager Pat Murphy didn't hold back, making it clear that Sproat needs to perform, stating, "We're not going to tolerate too many duds like this, that's for sure. If he's not going to step up -- we're trying to win. We're not rebuilding." That's a pretty direct message and it will be fascinating to see how Sproat responds, especially pitching in the high-altitude environment of Coors Field, which is never easy for any pitcher, let alone one trying to prove himself.

On the Rockies' side, they'll be sending RHP Ryan Feltner to the mound. Feltner is making his second start since returning from the injured list and his numbers, while not spectacular with a 2-1 record and 4.85 ERA, don't tell the whole story of his effectiveness. In his comeback start on May 30th against the San Francisco Giants, he looked solid, going six innings and allowing just four hits. He threw a modest 63 pitches in that outing, suggesting he's building back up nicely. Colorado will be hoping he can continue that positive trend and limit the damage against a Brewers team that's looking to solidify its position at the top of the NL Central.

The Rockies are also dealing with a significant number of injuries, which adds another layer of challenge to their season. They currently have three outfielders on the injured list: Brenton Doyle with a left oblique contusion, Mickey Moniak with right ankle tendinitis and Jordan Beck with a left hamstring strain. On the pitching front, several arms are sidelined, including Chase Dollander and Victor Vodnik. Further down the list, veterans like Kris Bryant, dealing with lumbar degenerative disk disease and Jose Quintana, with a left elbow sprain, are long-term absences. These injuries certainly test the depth of the roster as they try to compete against strong division rivals like the Brewers.

So, as the Rockies look to start this homestand on a positive note, they'll need their bats to come alive at Coors Field and their pitching to keep the Brewers' offense in check. For Brandon Sproat, this is a massive opportunity to silence his critics and prove he belongs in the Brewers' rotation, but doing so in Denver is a tall order. It promises to be an intriguing series opener with plenty of storylines to follow.
