Derby County Secures Tawanda Chirewa on Loan from Wolves
In a significant move for the 2024/25 season, Derby County has announced the loan signing of Tawanda Chirewa from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder from Zimbabwe will be joining the Rams on a season-long loan, marking Derby's tenth signing of this busy transfer window.
Chirewa's journey to Derby has been nothing short of impressive. Born in Chelmsford, England, Chirewa started his career at Ipswich Town. At just 16, he made history as the second youngest player to appear for Ipswich, debuting in an EFL Trophy match. His early promise led to a two-year scholarship and eventually a professional contract with the Tractor Boys. During his time at Ipswich, he made several appearances, including notable performances in the EFL Trophy and the FA Cup.
Last summer, Chirewa transitioned to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he continued to showcase his potential. Initially part of Wolves’ Under-21 setup, he quickly made his mark by scoring five goals in seven Premier League 2 matches. His rapid development earned him a spot in the senior squad, where he made ten appearances across both the Premier League and the FA Cup. His first Premier League start came in April 2024, against Arsenal, underscoring his rapid progression.

On the international stage, Chirewa has already started making an impact. He has earned two caps for Zimbabwe, with his debut coming in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho and his first international goal following shortly in a match against South Africa.
Chirewa's move to Derby County is seen as a strategic step to gain valuable first-team experience. Derby County, who were promoted back to the Championship this season, have been active in the transfer market, strengthening their squad with several new faces. The addition of Chirewa is expected to add depth and versatility to the Rams' attacking options.
Paul Warne, Derby's manager, is enthusiastic about integrating Chirewa into the squad. With Chirewa's ability to play various attacking roles, including out wide and in advanced midfield positions, he is anticipated to make a significant impact. The young midfielder’s presence could provide Derby with the creativity and dynamism needed to compete effectively in the Championship.
Head of Professional Football Development at Wolves, Matt Jackson, highlighted Chirewa's growth and readiness for this challenge. He noted that Derby County's environment, particularly under Warne's guidance, provides a perfect setting for Chirewa to continue his development and gain crucial match experience.
As Derby County gears up for their EFL Cup match against Barrow, Chirewa might make his debut, giving fans a glimpse of his potential. This move aligns with Derby's strategy of building a competitive squad while offering young talents like Chirewa a platform to shine and further their careers.
This latest addition underscores Derby County’s commitment to a proactive transfer strategy, aiming to strengthen their squad for a challenging season ahead. Fans can look forward to seeing Chirewa's contributions as he embarks on this exciting chapter with the Rams.
