North Queensland Cowboys Edge Knights in Thrilling NRL Showdown
The 2024 NRL season continues to deliver excitement, with North Queensland Cowboys securing a thrilling 28-16 victory over Newcastle Knights at Queensland Country Bank Stadium. In a match filled with momentum swings, the Cowboys rose to the challenge in front of their home crowd, cementing their place in the next round. The emotional high of the game was perfectly captured in a post-match embrace between Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater and club legend Johnathan Thurston, a moment that symbolized the pride and passion of the Cowboys' faithful.
Scott Drinkwater, who played a pivotal role in the Cowboys' win, reflected on the intensity of the game in his post-match interview. "The crowd was buzzing tonight," Drinkwater said, acknowledging the vital role that the Townsville fans played. He highlighted how the energy in the stadium lifted the team, especially during a challenging second half. "At half-time, we were told to stay calm, stick to our processes, and not panic. We trusted the process and it worked out for us," he added. Despite some nail-biting moments, including the ever-dangerous Kalyn Ponga threatening with every run, the Cowboys managed to hold their ground.

One key moment came when Dane Gagai's dropped ball near the end of the game cost the Knights a potential comeback. Reuben Cotter took advantage of the error, scoring a try that ignited the stadium. Drinkwater acknowledged how close the game had been, saying, "It could've gone either way with that pass to Gagai, but fortunately for us, they didn’t score."
With the win, the Cowboys now head to Sydney for their next test against the Cronulla Sharks, a team known for starting strong. But Drinkwater is ready for the challenge. "They’ll start fast, they always do, especially against us. We’ll need to match them physically from the start," he said, expressing confidence as the Cowboys continue their pursuit of the NRL premiership.
The Cowboys' determination, backed by their loyal supporters and led by standout performances, will be crucial as they gear up for the next stage of this thrilling NRL season.
