Andrew Garfield Honors Jessica Chastain's Selflessness During His Mother's Final Days
In a recent interview, Andrew Garfield expressed deep gratitude to Jessica Chastain for her extraordinary support during one of the most difficult times in his life—his mother's battle with cancer. Lynn Garfield, Andrew's mother, passed away in 2019 from pancreatic cancer. During that emotionally trying period, while filming "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," Chastain made an incredibly generous and thoughtful gesture that Andrew will never forget.
Andrew recalled how Jessica Chastain, alongside Searchlight Pictures executive David Greenbaum, rearranged the filming schedule so he could spend time with his ailing mother. Despite the production's demanding schedule, Chastain and the team paused filming in North Carolina for several days. This allowed Andrew to fly back to England and be with his mother for 10 precious days. The kindness displayed by Chastain during this time was something Andrew deeply cherished, as it gave him the opportunity to share some of his final moments with his mother.

In addition to Chastain's support, Andrew also reflected on the encouraging words he received from another co-star, Vincent D'Onofrio. D'Onofrio, who had gone through a similar experience of losing someone close, reminded Andrew that he needed to be with his family. "Go. You got to go," D'Onofrio told him, and this advice further reinforced Andrew's decision to leave the set and be by his mother's side.
The connection between Andrew and Jessica during this time was not just about professional courtesy, but a profound and touching bond. They shared a "beautiful ritual" while working on the film, taking drives every Sunday to the now-closed Christian theme park, Heritage USA. This symbolic act helped them connect with the spiritual essence of their roles, but also brought them closer as individuals who were navigating life’s emotional and personal complexities.
Andrew's recollection of Jessica's thoughtfulness during such a critical time reveals the depth of compassion that exists within the entertainment industry, where co-stars can transcend professional relationships and become real sources of comfort and support.
