Over 500 Evacuated as Oakland Hills Keller Fire Threatens Homes Amid Diablo Winds
The Oakland Hills are once again facing a significant wildfire threat. On October 18, 2024, a fast-moving fire broke out near Interstate 580, forcing the evacuation of over 500 residents. The blaze, now referred to as the Keller Fire, began around 1:30 p.m. and spread rapidly due to a combination of dry conditions and powerful Diablo winds. These winds, notorious for their hot and dry gusts, spurred the fire's progression, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. The National Weather Service had already issued a red flag warning, indicating heightened fire danger, which remains in effect through Saturday.
Firefighters have been working tirelessly to contain the fire. More than 120 firefighters from multiple departments responded to the five-alarm call, battling flames that threatened dozens of homes. So far, two houses have suffered direct damage from the fire, with one significantly burned and the other experiencing minor impacts. Additionally, around ten other homes have been affected by smoke and water. While no injuries have been reported, the swift response was crucial in preventing further destruction.

The blaze consumed over 13 acres of land in just a few hours, burning through eucalyptus trees and jumping across roadways, which made containment efforts challenging. The fire caused significant traffic disruptions along I-580, where emergency vehicles struggled to reach the scene amid gridlock. Westbound lanes have since reopened, but the traffic chaos underscores the severity of the situation. Some drivers even resorted to using freeway shoulders or on-ramps to escape the area, adding to the congestion.
Power outages have compounded the difficulty for local residents, as Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) initiated Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in the affected regions to reduce the risk of further fires. Around 16,000 customers lost electricity due to the precautionary measures, with the potential for up to 20,000 more to be impacted in the coming days.
The cause of the Keller Fire is still under investigation, but the conditions were ripe for such an incident. The combination of dry vegetation, high winds, and the ongoing Diablo wind event created the perfect storm for a wildfire. Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene through Saturday, carefully monitoring wind patterns as they work toward full containment.
This fire also serves as a grim reminder of the devastating 1991 Oakland Hills fire, which occurred almost exactly 33 years ago and destroyed nearly 3,000 homes, killing 25 people. As residents face the current fire threat, many are recalling that tragic event. With wind gusts expected to persist through the weekend, authorities are urging caution and preparedness.
