Anna Kendrick's directorial debut Woman of the Hour tells the disturbing real-life story of Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who shockingly appeared on the popular TV show The Dating Game in the midst of his murders. Alcala, often referred to as "The Dating Game Killer," was charming, intelligent, and good-looking—traits that helped him lure his victims while evading suspicion for years. But behind this facade lay a monstrous man who was ultimately convicted of eight murders, though he is believed to have killed far more.

Rodney Alcala's appearance on The Dating Game in 1978 remains one of the most bizarre episodes in TV history. On the show, three men vied for the attention of a bachelorette, who asked questions to determine who she’d choose for a date. Alcala was selected by contestant Cheryl Bradshaw, who later said she found him “creepy” after the taping and wisely declined to go on the date—a decision that likely saved her life.

Alcala had a deeply twisted double life. While he posed as a suave, aspiring photographer, he was using this guise to exploit and murder young women. His killing spree, which spanned from the early 1970s to 1979, involved posing as a photographer and luring victims into secluded areas, where he would assault and murder them. While convicted of eight killings, investigators suspect his victim count could exceed 100. He was finally convicted in 1980 for the murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe, though his sentence was overturned and retried several times before forensic evidence linked him to multiple other murders.

Woman of the Hour dramatizes Alcala's eerie charm and his horrific crimes without glorifying the violence. Kendrick’s film focuses not on the murders themselves, but the moments leading up to them, exposing how Alcala manipulated his victims. By casting herself as Cheryl Bradshaw, Kendrick brings to light the unsettling reality that a serial killer nearly wooed his way into a date under the spotlight of a national TV show.
