Kyshawn George Set for Special "Hometown" NBA Debut with Wizards vs Raptors
Kyshawn George is about to experience a unique "hometown" debut in the NBA. Although George grew up in Switzerland, the Washington Wizards' pre-season opener against the Toronto Raptors in Montreal feels like a homecoming for him. His father, Deon George, was born and raised in Montreal, and much of Kyshawn’s extended family still resides there. While Kyshawn has never lived in Montreal, this game offers a chance to play in front of family and friends in the city that holds so much personal significance.
Kyshawn's journey to this point has been an international one. He was born in Aigle, Switzerland, and after growing up in Europe, he honed his basketball skills in high school in France before making the leap to U.S. college basketball with the Miami Hurricanes. His performances with Miami saw him evolve from a backup role to a starting player, averaging 7.6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in his final season.

Selected 24th overall by the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA Draft, George was quickly traded to the Wizards, where he joins a young and rebuilding roster. The Wizards are banking on him, along with fellow draft picks like Alexandre Sarr and Carlton Carrington, to help turn the team around. For Kyshawn, the journey so far has been exciting, especially stepping into the NBA, where he now faces the challenge of competing at the highest level of basketball. One of the biggest adjustments for him hasn’t been the physical aspect, but rather the mental side—learning the NBA’s terminology and adapting to the professional level’s expectations.
What makes this upcoming game in Montreal special isn’t just the competition. Kyshawn will be playing in front of his grandmother, aunts, and cousins, who still live in the city. While Kyshawn admits it feels surreal to be treated like a hero in Montreal, the attention doesn’t faze him. For him, it’s just part of the opportunity and responsibility that comes with being an NBA player.
As he gears up for this moment, George remains focused on the bigger picture. He’s excited about the future with the Wizards, working hard with his teammates and embracing his role in the team’s development. Even though this is just the pre-season, Sunday’s game holds extra significance for George as he takes the court in a place that, while not technically his hometown, feels like one.
