
IRCC Removes LMIA-Based Job Offer Points from Express Entry CRS
The Canadian immigration landscape has just undergone a significant shift. As of December 18, 2024, the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) announced that it will remove additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for candidates with a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This change has sparked widespread discussion as it directly impacts the way Express Entry candidates are assessed for Canadian permanent residency.
Previously, candidates who had an LMIA-backed job offer could earn an additional 50 or 200 CRS points, depending on the type of occupation. For example, candidates with job offers in high-level executive positions (NOC TEER 0) would receive 200 points, while those in any other TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 positions were awarded 50 points. These additional points were crucial for many, as they could mean the difference between receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residency or not.
The announcement, made by Immigration Minister Marc Miller in a televised interview on December 17, comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Canada's immigration system. The rationale behind the change is to reduce the potential for fraud and to increase the overall integrity of the system. Minister Miller emphasized that removing these additional points would eliminate the incentive for candidates to purchase an LMIA, a practice that has raised concerns in recent years.
